The Wartime Blackout was taken very serious though! Just one little chink of light showing to the outside brought a visit from an irate Warden banging at your door. Most houses had wooden shutters fitted to the inside of the windows. This also helped prevent any flying glass if the windows got blown out from a bomb exploding nearby.
The house I was born in (and some of the neighbouring houses) had all the back windows blown out, due to large bomb exploding quite some distance away. As I was born in Sheffield, this was a major target due to all the many Steel Works situated there.
