Is it a laptop?
If not, are you using a standard wired keyboard?
Is it connected to a USB port?
Is the fault intermittant?
Could one of the keys stuck?
If you open a new text file with NotePad, does it still happen?
Check in "Start > Regional and Languages options" to make sure you have the correct Country selected.
In "Start > Keyboard > Haeware > Properties > Driver", is the keyboard driver OK?
Make sure you haven't bent one of the pins in the keyboard plug, and the socket looks ok.
As the keyboard has moving parts, it's the *most* likely thing to go wrong first.
The easiest thing to eliminate it is to buy yourself a cheap bog standard keyboard and try it?
Make sure you get one that is for your country. If the Double Quotes key is not the 3rd from the left, it's not a UK keyboard.

I recently had trouble with my computer and had to reinstall windows. Now everything is hunky dory except that certain video clips all have "psychadelic" colours while some (u tube) are ok. I have downloaded the free edition of realplayer but wonder if there are other programmes that I have lost when I reinstalled windows. Any thoughts?

I think videos on YouTube are all converted to Flash. So, you'd need to know which file-types are giving trouble.
Check for updates on Windows Media Player, Adobe Flash Player, QuickTime or any other players you have.

My Windows wouldn't open, kept giving "no signal". installed disc, went to safe mode and R for repair with no luck. Took it to the specialists from whom I bought the computer 5 years ago. They also upgraded memory to make it work faster. On getting it back my AVG programme wasn't working, then I couldn't get onto the internet, finally and laboriously sorted the above. by re-installing etc. Now I find my Nero programme won't come up - states "Internal error has occurred - re-install product" Drat, I've lost the disc which they gave me when I had a DVD player installed. By the way I've never been able to burn a DVD except as data with this new programme. Any suggestions please : and can I fix an "internal error" seems everytime I take it to the shop something else goes wrong.

Reply from: Bob
Date: Sunday 11th May 2008 at 5:34 AMThe original fault might have corrupted some of your programs. When they fixed your computer, they won't reinstall any faulty programs (unless you ask them) as they would have to charge you for these.
If you've lost your original burning disk, the only thing you can do is remove Nero and get a free one.
As always with free software, you have to be careful where you download it from. Use a well known site like "download.com" or similar, and search for DVD burning. Also the free edition of "www.deepburner.com" was recommended to me from someone, but I've never tried it.
Re: "Internal errors", if you google for this, you'll see that this is a big subject.

I had to Google for this, as I'd no idea what it was.
It doesn't look like it's suitable for a computer if you read this:
http://review.zdnet.com/lcd-monitors/olympus-eye-trek-fmd/4505-3174_16-6780564.html
Though it looks really cool!
The good: Comes with leather case; compact control box.
The bad: Poor image and audio quality; no S-Video or PC connectivity; eyestrain may result with extended use.
The bottom line: Its inability to connect to a computer and the absence of S-Video further reduce this unit's already limited appeal.

Thanks
i read that before
it s actually possible
i do now manage to get something on my eye trek

as i said i m using an adapter 7 pin output normal video jack input
what should i do?

I would think it's just not a 100% compatible, as the price limits what you get for your money, but I'm no expert on these viewing glasses.
On some sites, it says the Olympus Eye Trek FMD 200 is no longer available, and it doesn't get very good reviews on colours and image jumping. The newer higher grade models (which are much more expensive) seem to perform better.
Sorry, I can't be of much help.

Date: Sunday 27th April 2008 at 5:55 PMThe first thing is, are we talking about a stand-alone Personal Computer?
Did you see it working before you brought it home?
Can you hear the fans running, and can you open the CD drawer?
If you've connected it up correctly, you could have dislodged a board or done something when you transported it home. Most newer computers have some retaining device to hold the boards tight in, but some older models don't. Disk drives can get damaged if shook about.
Most plugs are colour coded now, e.g. mouse = green, keyboard = purple etc.
The monitor connection is very easy to bend one of the pins, if inserted roughly.
You could try and reseat all the boards, but you have to be careful as static in your body can damage some boards.
With all fault-finding, you need to halve your problem, so you need to check whether it's the stack or the monitor. The only way you can do this without specialised equipment is by substitution with another computer.
Note: There's always a risk using substitution that a fault could transfer to the good component!

There are many reasons why you can't view some webpages.
You need to determine whether your computer is blocking them, or the site is blocking you?
Some sites use cookies and/or sessions. These can pass variables from one page to another. If you've increased your security settings, the information will not get passed and the page won't display.
What is the exact wording that you get?
Does it have a number like "Error: 403, 404" etc?
Do you have SpyBot or anything similar installed?
These block sites that are known to be unsafe.
Downloading with a 56K modem when the internet is busy is always going to be problem. You can easily get cut off half way through and lose everything.
If your internet connection is slow, you might be getting timed out.
Have you got an example of a page you can't access?

Hi folks. I own a Dell Dimesion 9100 running XP. When I launch IE7, I have to manually connect to the internet using:
'start' then 'connect to' to broadband ISP. I used to be able to connect automatically. What's happened? Could someone help?

It could be just that your browser is retrieving the home page info from your Temporary Internet Files folder.
Click your Internet Explorer and manually type in a site that you haven't visited recently into the address bar.
Example: google.com or google.co.uk
If it connects, there's nothing wrong.
You can alter the way temporary files are stored.
Start > Control Panel then in "Browser history", click the "settings" button.
There's also the excellent free http://www.ccleaner.com/ which cleans out temporary files and the registry.

Hi Bob, thanks for the info, but the problem isn't getting up the home page, but actually getting onto the internet itself. I tried as above to no avail. I run ccleaner regularly.

Is this something that has always happened, or has it just started?
In Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections, do you have "Never dial a connection" ticked?
I can't find any settings in Internet Explorer that would stop it automatically trying to connect.
What is the broadband company you're with, and is it cable or a phone line modem?
What actually happens when you click Internet Explorer and type something in the address bar?

I'm guessing that this monitor is not the original one that came with the computer.
Normally the instructions say, turn on your monitor, then fire up your computer.
Try it the other way round: Turn on the computer and after a couple of seconds, turn on the monitor. I had an old one that worked this way, so it's worth a try.
If that doesn't work, you need to download and install the driver for the exact model of the monitor you have. Drivers are usually available for free at the website of the manufacturer. You'd need to google for this, if you don't know it. You may have the wrong driver installed.
It is possible that the graphics card (or onboard graphics) is misbehaving though.

Well, here's what to do to rectify it:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314057
But, if you really want to wipe your hard drive and start a fresh:
Do you have a Windows install disk, and all the drivers that are needed?
Windows does contain some universal drivers, but they don't have them all.
You would also have to configure your dial-up or broadband connection and numerous other things.
Unless you've got some other serious faults, I wouldn't recommend doing it.

First off, I own a Gateway GT4016 desktop computer. On the front there's a little panel thing in one of the slots like where the dvd drive is fixed that has a USB connection and two slots labeled "SD/MMC/SM/MS/MS-PRO/xD" and "CF/MICRODRIVE".
I, being the genius that I am, inserted my CF card from my camera into the CF drive, but I think I did it backwards. It wasn't reading and didn't click or anything, so I got tweezers to try to pull it out, but that just pushed it in more and now I can't even try to pull it out from the front. It doesn't read on My Computer and whenever I try to open the drive called "CompactFlashI/II (H:)" it says I need to insert a disk. If I click eject, it does nothing.
My question is, how do I go about getting my card back out? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

If abracadabra doesn't work and you can't extract it with tweezers, you might have already damaged it.
I think you'll have to take it to a repair shop if it's that tight in. They might get it out by removing the cover from the unit. If it's physically damaged inside, I doubt whether they will be able to fix it and a new unit might be needed.

HELP, I spent about 3 hours working on a web site, I used Frames but as I built each page I used the same frame just changed the contents of the page. Thought that was going well...BUT when I went back to see how everything was looking all I see when I open the pages are the actual content...NO header and no Sidebar content :-( What did I do and how do I un-do it to see the header and catagory bar?

Hi T Bone,
There's a very simple example here:
http://www.circlecity.co.uk/help/frames.php
Just a menu and 3 pages.
If you use the "Contact Editor" link and post the index page (the frameset page) and the menu page (links page), I'll have a look. They are really easy once you get the hang of them.
Not many webmasters use them, due to search engines having trouble crawling them, but that problem seems to be rectified now.

Hi - I have a HP Pavillion desktop running XP. Upto 4 times per day. the whole system just freezes and I have to turn it off manually - even the ctrl-alt-del to shutdown all applications doesn't work. I'm running F-Secure anti virus. Additionally, it seems to take an age (upto 10 seconds) to open a new explorer browser.
Any ideas anyone?

There are so many things that could cause this, a software or a hardware problem, a virus even though you have F-Secure.
In "My Computer", right click your hard drive and select "Properties", how much free space is left (as a rough percentage of the total) and how many drives are showing?
Start > Control Panel > System, how many MB of Ram have you got?
What programs do you mainly run, e.g. graphic programs, games etc or do you just surf?

Hi Bob - I have a 180gb HD with 30gb free space at the moment. Also have a P4 3.2GHz PC with 512Mb RAM. I have 2 drives - C drive and D drive.
I don't run games on the PC, just tend to use it for internet.
Reply from: Bob

So you have 150GB of your 180GB hard drive used and only have Window XP?
I'm not trying to be nosey but if you just surf, what is occupying all that space?
Windows uses the hard drive for various things, and it may not be enough left with all the stuff you have.
If it doesn't freeze every day, suggests it isn't a hardware problem, but something you're running/downloading, or you're just running out of memory. Are you downloading films etc?
I'm trying to work out if you have any memory hogging programs?
Example: Even my machine will freeze if I edit very large or multiple images.
Also, though 512MB RAM is enough for WIN to run, it runs far better with 1024MB or more.

Hey there...
i am using laptop, HP Pavillion dv6000, and i have the following problem:
When i want to connect to the net wireless, i use the wireless icon down right as usual, and i connect..
But sometimes when i turn on my laptop, this icon is missing from there, and that means i cant connect to the net. what can i do for this problm?
Please help meeeeeeeeeee:P
i downloaded 2-3 different drivers for wireless from hp websites, but is still the same prblm. sometimes is ok and sometimes is not..
Is there any solution?
thnx in advance!
Reply from: Bob
Date: Saturday 8th March 2008 at 4:06 PMIs the wireless icon on your desktop or in the bottom taskbar?
If it's in the taskbar, it may be hidden if the taskbar is locked.
If you click "Start", is the program anywhere in the program list?
It could be that the icon is corrupt, so when it does show, right click it (note the Target so you know where the program is) and try another icon.
You could also make a new desktop icon by finding where the software is, then right click it, and select "Create Shortcut". The program will probably have the file extension ".exe"
If the icon hasn't been missing for too long, you could try a "System Restore" to a previous date before this occurred.
If it's on your desktop, it may be that the wireless software is corrupted so you'd need to reinstall this, if you've still got the program.
Reply from: Kallas
Date: Saturday 8th March 2008 at 7:53 PMThe problem is not the icon. i checked it, i put it on desktop.
an d if it works normally it works there also. or if is not work so is missing from desktop too..
so something else is the problem.

Date: Sunday 9th March 2008 at 4:12 PMWhen the icon does show, right click it, select "Properties" (select "Shortcut" from the top, if it's not already selected) and note the "Target" address. Or click "Find Target" which will take you to where it is.
If you go to that file and double click it, does the wireless software work?
If that works, is the program loaded into your "Startup Sequence"?
The easiest thing would be to re-install the wireless software (to eliminate it). Have you still got it

?

Reply from: Bob
Date: Monday 10th March 2008 at 3:13 PMIt looks like the wireless device itself may be faulty, as it's not communicating. If it's intermittent, the icon isn't showing because it's not receiving a signal, or the signal isn't strong enough.
I presume you've tried putting the computer in the same room as the wireless modem, to make sure the signal isn't getting blocked or out of range.
If you've had this wireless modem set up correctly and working on this computer, the only thing now is to try it on someone else's computer, or get it checked out at a repair shop.

Hi, My Packard Bell imedia started not to switch on from the front case switch if you kept on pressing it on and off a lot off times it would fire up in the end, but now it is completey dead, I have tested the switch which is ok, I think it could now be the mother board or faulty power pack supply, anyway of testing for this or has anybody else come across the problem.
Reply from: Bob

Without a specialised test setup, you're not going to be able to check the mother board.
You could check the voltages of the power supply (if you know them) with a high impedance voltmeter, but it's a lot of messing about.
As it's been slowly getting worse, my best guess is the power supply, but it could be anything really.

I'm used to my HP laptop freezing from time to time but this time it failed to restart. On reverting to recovery disks at 91% the following error appears:-

Any help would be really appreciated.
Reply from: Bob
Date: Saturday 8th March 2008 at 1:00 PMDid you create a "once only" restore disk when you got the computer?
It's also possible that the restore disk is damaged somehow, or the hard drive or other components are now failing, if it's been giving trouble previously.
When you get the message "X:\recover\akerhq1a.bu\install>" and it's on a plain black screen, the right angle bracket ">" is usually the prompt, i.e. it's asking you for some information.
What happens if you just hit enter?
It may be asking you whether you want to install the backup.
What happens if you type "Y" (without the quotes, for Yes), then hit enter?
The "akerhq1a.bu" will be specifically just for HP, so you might find some help here:-

Hi,
About two or three months ago I started having problems with my monitor randomly shutting off with the message displaying no signal.
It would seem that it started to do this about a month after I switched my memory around in my machine to dual interlieved. I tried getting
a different video card and the same problems occurred. I had to call Asus about my other computer the other day and asked what they thought
as the pc I'm having trouble with has a p5gd2 Mo Bo in it. The tech there told me he thought it could be a problem with my power supply, he also had said that maybe I should try getting the new service pack one for Vista.
I some how don't think that is going to change anything and have all the updates on my machine, but I don't think that is the reason for another reason and that is because I ran XP on this machine from square one and had it on here when this problem started. I also tried taking the setup for memory off of auto and put it to the 533mhz that the memory is rated at, when I did this then the problem really escalated, that I just tried doing today. My theories on this are that perhaps the memory is going bad? There were and are still times when this happens that the processor doesn't post for a few times of hitting the power button on the pc. So I'm a bit befwaggled on this, never had this problem with any of the machines I've built in the past, I am starting to tend to believe that there is either a problem with the power or the memory.
I've combed the internet and havn't found one Jack out there who's had this problem, at first it seemed that when I got certain updates from ms that it caused this, but in between loading the os and just booting in the beginning and going into set up, in fact just in set up the monitor will shut down.
That's why I'm really begining to believe it is hardware related and not software/driver related. Anyone's thought's on this?
Thanks

Date: Saturday 8th March 2008 at 1:19 AMHi Estaud,
Intermittant problems are the hardest to find. It could be that the power supply is dipping (not regulating properly) occasionally. If the voltage is fluctuating, it can do stange things. If you built this computer yourself, is the power supply beefy enough to cope with everything you've added?
It could actually be the monitor, lead or pin connections, but that's more unusual.
Does the new video card fit in easily (without forcing it) and is it getting hot?
A thing that is worth trying is reseating all the boards. Constant hot and cold (expansion and contraction) can cause problems with the connections.
If you go into Safe Mode and leave it running, does it still do it?
Do you know if the computer is still running, as it may have shut down for some reason? If you put a music disk in (playing) and the monitor shuts down, does the music keep playing?
Does it ever do it from cold, as if it does, it's not likely to be a heat problem.
To eliminate any memory problems, you can download a free memory checker from http://memtest86.com
You have to burn this program to disk as an *image*, not a normal file. Instuctions are on the site. To run the program, insert the disk you created, then reboot. It will run forever until you stop it, so you can leave it running all day to really test it.
Also, enter "Wim" into the search forum box to see his message, as he had a similar problem and it was a dodgy power suppy.

Date: Saturday 8th March 2008 at 11:42 PMHey Bob,
Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer my delima, you know the weirdest thing after I left this post it was like Microsoft was big brothering my pc and a lot of weird but I think, and I say I think and knock on wood good stuff happened. I'm begining to think that it was a microsoft problem, the first time ever, I came in to this machine and moved the mouse and the monitor actually came back on. I've tried that before thinking that power management had shut it down but no such luck.
Well, then I looked in power management again just to see that everything was as I had set it that the monitor never shuts down, but this time around it was set to the default like when you first load your os to shut down after 20 minutes. I really think there must have been a problem that either I fixed when I tried running Vista's repair deal with the disk in or some magic update hit my pc. I then got really brave and actually let ms update that update I said I didn't want because to tell you quite truthfully I was quite confused to say the least as to what this problem was.
Well then I went and reloaded my x700 ati drivers and software and it actually loaded in fully, since I'd never owned one of these cards before I wasn't aware that the drivers hadn't loaded in correctly. I can tell you that I had tried to access the panel for this card and it crashed the monitor out in the past also. Well I'll say that, and I mean, knock on wood cause I've been there before with this thing for about a week where everything ran great, but at this point I think it would seem that the problem has been resolved. I copied everything you put in the reply to this and will keep it on hand, it the lil sucker get's to the point of having a bad hair day, lol

I'll try all this and see what comes up.
But again, I really appreciate your taking the time to give me all the suggestions and I'll keep up with this over the next week and let you know how it's going.
Thanks Bob

You can go to http://www.epson.com and choose your country, or go to http://www.epson.co.uk if you're in the UK.
At the righthand side somewhere, there is "Drivers & Support".
Select Ink printers and your model Stylus 915 from the boxes.
There are 3, but I think you'll only need the "Driver" and the "Status Monitor".

If they wiped your system, they would have reformatted your hard drive (and possibly replaced it). If they did that, all previous stuff you had would now be missing.
You could replace the CD/DVD yourself. The hardest part on some computers is getting the facia without breaking it, unless you've previously worked on that model.
You need to ask them if the CD/DVD is faulty, how much would it cost to replace it.

Can you get into 'Safe Mode' by pressing F8 constantly on startup. If you can't and there's nothing displayed on the screen at all, you've either got a virus that has wiped your hard drive, or one of the many components, monitor, hard drive, boards etc have failed.
As it was working before shutdown, it's probably not the monitor.
Sometimes, just reseating the boards cures some faults, but if you've never opened a computer, you might do more damage by opening it.
If it's a virus, and you can't get in, you can reformat the hard drive and try to put Vista back on again.
Have you got any disks like an install or recovery disk? Depending on what disks you've got, you might lose everything that you've put on that computer.

I think you'd be better letting a repair shop have a look at it though
