Hi, I have a big problem. Yesterday when I was reading some news on the internet, my desktop computer (which is about 4 years old) suddently went crazy. To tell more exactly, there was some strange things going on on my monitor - something like a mix of some random colours. I restarted my comp but notning changed - the problem with monitor was still there. At first I thought that the problem was my monitor, so I checked it by connecting the monitor on my laptop. And I realized that the monitor works just fine. Now I don't know what seems to be the problem... is it hard drive or motherboard or sth else? The monitor is OK, but if it connented on my desktop comp it shows nothing, except some strange random static colour mix. So now I can't use my comp, in fact I can't even go to BIOS or format disc... Today I tried to set a network (ethernet) between the desktop and my laptop and it works - I mean, I internet works fine, I can see printers and some shared folders, which is strange, because I thought that the problem was the hard disc drive...

Any ideas what should I do? I would be really glad to receive any usefull answer.

Hi Eddie,
If you're using the standard Outlook Express, open it up.

Click Tools > Options > Send.

Then click the "HTML Setting" for the "Mail Sending Format".

Is the "Send pictures with message" box ticked?

Firstly, try a "System Restore" to an early date, and see if that helps.

How do you know it's a virus and what is it called?

It could be that you've got the wrong country selected, if the @ key and the double quotes are reversed. The UK and US keyboards differ in that respect.

I don't have Vista yet, but in Windows XP it was:
Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > then select your country and click OK.

My computer screen gives me this message "check signal cable" and I don't know what to do. Please help.
Reply from: Bob

Have you considered checking the "signal cable" Laugh

The message is really saying that your monitor is not getting a signal from your computer.

If it's plugged in correctly, it's a good chance that the video card has expired, but I would think you'd be better taking it to a repair shop to get it checked out. There's not a lot you can do without specialised equipment yourself.

Providing that you haven't already emptied the Recycle Bin, double click the icon to open it.
Then "right click" the file in question and select "Restore".
It should put it back to where it was situated on your computer.

Hi bob
i have copied my favorites to a cd r disc, as a back up, do i need to finalise it , as if my computor broke down i would need to use it in another computor thanks
Reply from: Bob

When you finalise a CD, it will write a lead in and out track, so nothing else can be added to that CD. If that's all you want on the disk, then yes, you should finalise it.

Note: it's now not recommended to use the stick-on-labels on CDs because of the high speeds they spin at. Just use a Sharpie Pen or CD Marker to write on it.

Bob i have been told that you finalise a cd, so you can play it on another computor, is it correct that if i dont finalise it , i can only play it on the computor that burned it?thanks for all your help bob greatly appreciated eddie
Reply from: Bob

When you write stuff to a CD, it's similar to writing data to your hard drive, but of course, you can't alter or delete it, unless it's a Rewritable CD. To access the data, click "My Computer" then "Right Click" the disk in question and select "Explore", you can see what's on the disk you've made.

I doesn't matters if you finalise it or not, and will be able to be read with another computer, providing it's data. If you put MP3's on a disk and the other computer didn't have an MP3 player installed, it wouldn't play though.

Burning MP3's to make an Audio disk is a bit different and they will need to be finalised. Your software will convert it to a different format, suitable for most CD players just like any music CD you can buy.

Are you surfing with Internet Explorer 7?
How are you printing web pages. Do you just click the IE7's "Print" button when the web page is displaying?
It sounds like you're printing the "Source" of the web page.

If it is something like this "asegetp drjfkfglgdf djhycbacx", I would think your printer "driver" is corrupt, or the printer is faulty.

at the top it says

at the bottom it says
File//c:DOCUME-/xLOCALS~/TEMP/YDRJ995W.HTM
with lotsof goggledy gook in the middle.lol. if the driver is corrupt what can i do?
i bet you wish you had never answered my question but i am as fed up as you probably are.

It is a baffling problem, but I now don't think it's the printer driver.
It's printing the actual html code of the webpage, which it stores on your computer.

When you transfered to Virgin, did you install a program from their disk?

If you open your browser, select "Help" from the top menu, then click "About Internet Explorer", what version is it?

When doing anything like this, create a "System Restore Point" before you start.
Some things to try, but you may be better getting someone who is used to altering Windows setting for you.

Try resetting IE7 defaults:-
1. Go to Control Panel.
2. Click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Click "Program Access and Defaults".

If it's still faulty:-
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click Tools, then select Internet Options.
3. Switch to Advanced tab.
4. Click Reset, then OK.

If it's still faulty:-
When you print a Web page using Internet Explorer, it's saved as a temporary file (TMP) before it's printed. If temporary files are associated with a text editor (such as Notepad), Internet Explorer may mistake these files for plain text files and print the HTML code of the Web page you are viewing.

1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
2. On the View menu, click Folder Options, and then click the File Types tab.
3. In Registered File Types box, scroll through the file types looking for TMP.
4. If there is one, click Remove, and then click OK.
5. Be very careful not to alter any of the other file types.

If all else fails, the only person I found on the net that actually said he'd cured this problem finished up re-installing IE7. Don't attempt this yourself, or you could really mess things up Sick

Hi there, can anyone help me please? I have Talktalk (via AOL) and use this for emails, not Outlook Express. I want to be able to block just one person, but I cannot see anywhere on Talktalk or via their "help" facility. I would be very grateful if anyone could advise me on this. Hoping to hear from someone soon and thanks for a really great site (recommended by a friend). Kind regards, Joan.

I'm assuming you're using the AOL email client to receive your mail.
Try this from AOL's help section:-

Hi again Bob,

I've tried going into the sites you listed, but am coming up against a brick wall I'm afraid. I'm being asked if I want to re-join AOL, which I don't. We use Talktalk as our Broadband connection and nowhere under their "help" list is anything to do with blocking emails, so I'm going round in circles. Maybe there isn't the option on Talktalk to do blocking. Any further help you could give me would be gratefully received. Thanks again for your time. Kind regards, Joan. Sad

The link I gave was to block emails in AOL, so that was my mistake Sick

TalkTalk is just your Internet Service Provider.
To block someone's email, it would be done in the email client itself.

Blocking an email address will only work if that person always uses this address. If this is spam you are getting, it needs a different approach as spam is mostly send with a faked address that alters every time.

What is the email client called that you use to send/receive emails?

Hi Bob,

thanks again for your fast response. No, I'm not talking about spam at all, just want to block someone who comes directly through to me on my email address. All I know is that I sign into www.webmail.talktalk.net to get incoming or send emails. Hope this helps! Kind regards, Joan. Confused

So you send/receive online instead of directly to/from your computer, which I think is called TT Webmail.
If you've had a look in all the settings that display in TT Webmail, try this link and ask for help:-

Hi Bob,

thanks for your reply. After Windows Internet Explorer has connected, it goes into www.orange.co.uk/, then onto orange uk home page, then I enter in the second box down (with Yahoo symbol beside it) www.webmail.talktalk/net. Does that mean Orange is my email client then? I have already tried the talktalkmembers forum site, but no-one has answered me as yet, just leaving me messages that administrators/moderators can only deal with one person per day, so will have a long wait!

Thanks anyway for trying to help me, much appreciated.

Kind regards,
Joan Confused
Reply from: Bob
Date: Friday 20th June 2008 at 8:10 PM

When you click your Internet Explorer icon, it will go to the page that is set for your homepage. This can be set to any site you like. You must have set it at some time for Orange. You could set your homepage to http://www.webmail.talktalk.net/ and it would take you straight there with one click.

You aren't using an email client (example: Outlook Express) but checking your mail online at the TalkTalk site. When you log into their site, I would guess there's an email filter somewhere in the menu links, that will block addresses, or words and phrases.

Without having a TalkTalk account, I can't see what settings are available to you.

I seem to have encountered a problem, when my computer boots up i have active desktop recovery, but nothing will restore it. i then went to do a sysytem restore, however all these options have been removed from my start menu. i cannot use any software ie. cd or dvd, as it doesnot recognise my c drive. i can still go on line by using a round about way. is there another way to do a system restore, if not i have alresady tried running the xp disk to formatt my hard drive but to to noo avail. anybody out there help.

If your system restore points have become corrupt for any reason, then you can't get them back.

Check the hard-drive, if you can:
Does the drive icon display in "My Computer"?
Click "My Computer" then right-click the C drive. Select "Properties > Tools", tick "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors", then hit "Check Now". It can take quite some time to scan. Do you get any errors?

Formatting the hard drive will delete everything on it.
What happened when you tried to do this from the XP disk?

I cant access the "my computer" at all, the icon and the program option from the start up menu have disappeared, there is no command prpt either i have tried several virus killers they detect quite a few malware and spyware but this doesnt make any difference, can still use the net but will not play any games (pc mostly used for gaming and the net) im also getting a blue screen now (which isnt god news i think)And there is no way to access system restore. when i put the xp disc in it doesnt do anything apart from reboot. i have pressed f8 and gone into setup it then displays the process bar on the black screen which says setting up windows (i think cant quite rem) however this processs freezes as i have left it overnight. any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Does your computer have a floppy drive?

Can you get into the BIOS by pressing (usually F2) on startup?
You may need to alter the Boot order.

In one of the displays, it will say something like:-
First Boot Device [Hard Disk]
Second Boot Device [CDROM]

You need to swap the boot order to CDROM first.
Save & exit, then put the Windows disk in and reboot.
On startup, it should hopefully boot into the Windows disk.

What you're doing is making the CD Drive the first to boot into.
There are different BIOS types, so it may be slightly different.
Depending on which Windows disk you have (You'll need the Produce Key!), you should be able to re-install Windows from the disk.

If it works, you need to go back into BIOS and alter the boot order back to what it was.
If you've never been in the BIOS, don't alter anything else in there.
You navigate by arrow keys + the Enter key, as your mouse will not work in there.

It is possible though, that your hard drive has got bad sectors, or even the CD drive is damaged.

As you mentioned Formatting, this will wipe everything from the hard drive. That means you have no operating system to do anything at all. I wouldn't recommend this unless you've done one before.

You can't write to a DVD, so if you have any Writable DVDs, they aren't much use to you.

You can burn things to a Writable CD though, but they don't have the same capacity.

Somewhere on your computer will be a program to burn CDs. There are lots of different programs, so you need to find yours.

Click your big green "Start" button, then click "All Programs". See if you can see a program that's about CDs.

Hey I've tried everything I can think of any more and i still can't fix this. I installed Crysis the otherday however, i couldnt connect to any multiplayer games it wouldnt connect to the server. Its bundled with gamespy comrade and this wouldnt connect to its server either. I then uninstalled Crysis and installed F.E.A.R. Combat multiplyer i also couldnt connect to the server with this, it is bundled with gamespy arcade which i also couldnt connect. I then thought to try to log into xfire which i knew worked, this also failed and couldnt connect to the server. I then thought it could be something to do with me installing XP SP3 so i uninstalled this and tried again still nothing. For each of the above i disabled my zonealarm firewall, windows one is always disabled, and fowarded all the necessary ports on my netgear gd834gt router. Still couldnt conect. I rang my ISP and they said everything was fine with the connection, I can still browse the internet. However, when i tried to install a firmware update for my router when i tried to right click --> save link as it said it could not connect to the server. I then borrowed a laptop downloaded the file and installed it onto my computer. I dont think it has anything to do with the router because he could connect to te Crysis server through my wireless. I've downloaded winsockxpfix to try to sort it out and TCPoptimizer to try and sort my connection out but still no luck. I cant think of anything else but to either uninstall my netgear wificard and reset my internet connection or if its somethign more serious then that reinstall windows :( which i really dont want to do. Any help would be a godsend. Thank you

I've tried connecting my computer directly to my router via ethernet cable but it made no difference i could still connect to the internet but could not connect to servers.

Never disable your Firewall (even for a just minute) if your broadband is connected, as you can still get infected with something nasty.

Did you buy these games or were they free (maybe with a Crack)?
Do you have any programs that could block sites, example: SpyBot?

The router update should have worked, so I wild guess is that something is wrong with the router or software, or it's configured wrong and blocking.

I've never played online games so I don't know much about them. Are there any forums on the games sites that might help?

Reply from: Bob

I'd not heard of this before, but results from a google search seem to suggest this is a hostage program that has installed. You pay the bill to get rid of it. This isn't something where you can just delete a file and it's gone. It will have written devious files to your computer and put entries in your registry. They will have done everything to stop you removing it, so you have to pay them.

One thing you might try is using Windows "Restore" to an early date before you noticed this program appearing.

Hi, We've recently got a BT home hub and I have connected my PC to it wirelessly. A few days after we got it my computer started freezing after about half an hour or so of normal operation. Also, every time I tried to download something from a website, I started getting Error 403. These are not password protected pages and I could access them with no problems on our previous ISP. I have changed the wireless adapter I was using, in case that was part of the problem. Since then I have had no freezing (touch wood!) but I still get the error 403 when I try to access certain things (such as PDF documents or downloads) from websites. The only information I've been able to find so far has suggested there isn't much I can do about this. My boyfriend is connected to the same hub with his laptop and he isn't having any of these problems.
I'm hoping one of you really well informed people out there has some suggestions. Thanks, Cathy.

I take it back about the "no freezing". The second I posted the above message my PC froze and I had to turn it off at the switch. So I'm also looking for help with that problem. I'm assuming both the freezing and the 403 are part of the same thing.

There is a new update for Windows XP (KB932823) out now, which it says is to rectify not being able to download stuff in IE7. I've never had a problem with downloading myself, but it may help.

More serious is the freezing. It could be something you've installed, a corrupt file, running out of memory, or a hardware fault.

What program are you using when it freezes?
If you leave the computer unattended for an hour, does it still freeze?

Are you meaning that you've installed Incredimail, it's made itself your default email client, but you don't like it and want to remove it?

Usually (but not always) when you install something, XP makes a Restore Point for you.

Use your System Restore to go back to the day before you installed it, and it should put everything back to exactly how it was.

Some programs cannot be removed using "Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs".
They may be needed for Windows, or they just don't want you to delete it.
A typical one is McAfee, which normally needs a special program to remove it completely.

What are you trying to remove?

It is a kids program called Dogz 5.

If you've downloaded a free version, this may be the reason why you can't remove it.
And if it came with a "Crack" code, it may have spyware in it?

Try the free http://www.cleaner.com/ to see whether this will uninstall it (click the Tools section).

It must be a rogue version you have installed.
You need to find out where it is situated on your computer.
Normal programs are usually installed in "C:Program Files".

Create a "Restore Point" before you do anything!
Try to delete it manually and see what happens?
This will leave some redundant stuff in the registry, but the CCleaner should be able to remove them.

Click your "Start", then "System Restore".
Select "Create a restore point", then hit "Next".

Type in a Restore point description: e.g. "Before deleting Dogz5" (without the quotes) then hit "Create".

Worldseafising.com changed server on Friday. I can access the site using xp on my pc, however, on my vista laptop I'm still getting the old server with the message that the server is being moved. I have cleared temporary files, history etc and still cannot access the new site, either through I/E or Firefox. Both computers are wireless through the same router and ISP. Any ideas would be really appreciated.

It's still in the memory of your computer.

To force a complete "Refresh", I think it's "Ctrl key + your Refresh button"

Is it a laptop?
If not, are you using a standard wired keyboard?
Is it connected to a USB port?
Is the fault intermittant?
Could one of the keys stuck?
If you open a new text file with NotePad, does it still happen?

Check in "Start > Regional and Languages options" to make sure you have the correct Country selected.
In "Start > Keyboard > Haeware > Properties > Driver", is the keyboard driver OK?

Make sure you haven't bent one of the pins in the keyboard plug, and the socket looks ok.

As the keyboard has moving parts, it's the *most* likely thing to go wrong first.
The easiest thing to eliminate it is to buy yourself a cheap bog standard keyboard and try it?

Make sure you get one that is for your country. If the Double Quotes key is not the 3rd from the left, it's not a UK keyboard.
